Gaothair Forge
and Blacksmithing
Me, armed Cap-A-Pie, |
Welcome to Gaothair Blacksmithing. Here you will find various reproductions of arms and armour. I'm an avid history reader, and from my studies, I've attempted several historically accurate reproductions of period pieces. I've been into reenactment and living history for almost ten years now, and after making many pieces of my own using historical methods, I've gained a tremendous appreciation for the knowledge and craftsmanship that the master craftsmen of the past put into their work. First and foremost, I enjoy my work. It's quite satisfying to pour my mind and creativity into a project and take an idea for a piece from a vision to a reality. I endevor to put such effort into all my work, and especially the pieces that I put up for sale. The reason for this is that I want the buyer to be 110% satisfied with his purchase of my product. My good and positive reputation as an artisan craftsman is most important to me--a good name is better than riches, as the wise have said. Most recently I've been offering tomahawks designed with historical influences on eBay. In October 2007, I was able to travel to Louisville, KY, and see actual tomahawks on display at the Frazier International Museum. It's quite a fantastic place--their website can be viewed here at www.fraziermuseum.org. |
Pictured at right are a few of my most recent tomahawks. Each is forged from a 16 oz ball peen hammer, finish ground and filed, quenched in oil, and buffed with a wire brush wheel. The handles are cut to length from a 60 inch hoe handle from the hardware store. They are then drawknifed to rough dimensions and finish sanded. A light burning is next followed by finishing with tung oil. Endcaps are made from nickle-silver and are flush with the dimensions of the handles The wraps are leather dyed to a deep oxblood--I think it makes for a really nice look. |
